Tim Hortons Reopens First Store on Ottawa St.

Newcomers to Hamilton might wonder who, exactly, is Tim Horton? Because apparently, we have a shrine to him on virtually every corner.
Long before we reached this level of coffee saturation, it began with one store. Located on Ottawa Street North, begun by a Hamilton police officer and an NHL star, the first Tim Hortons opened on May 17, 1964.
Fifty years later, Hamiltonians still love their coffee, and we love our Timmies. So it only seems fitting that that first store received a major makeover this year. It has re-opened to rave reviews, offering all the standard treats, and more. It’s a two-storey, glass walled shrine to our revered doughnut shop.
On the upper level, it’s a Hortons history lesson: mugs, uniforms, photos, an original Timbit maker, and replicas of classic doughnuts. Out front, a bronze statue of Tim himself greets visitors. It all adds up to a fascinating look at a classic bit of Hamilton.
The official grand opening is slated for Wednesday. – Barry Gray
