Our best, from 2014

Each year, Spectator photographers take thousands of pictures, hundreds of which end up in the paper, online, or here, on our photo blog. For the past dozen years, we have held our own ‘in-house’ photo contest, giving us a chance to reflect on the year that was, and prepare to do it all again, bigger and better, in the new year. Here are the photos each of us – Kaz Novak, John Rennison, Gary Yokoyama, Scott Gardner, Cathie Coward, and myself – chose as our favourites, and asked our newsroom colleagues to vote on with us. Have a look. – Barry Gray

Hamilton,Ontario,Tuesday, July08, 2014 I was driving along King St. in a torrential downpour when I spotted this homeless person protecting a kitten. I pulled up ahead was lucky enough there was a tree to stand under and waited for the couple to walk towards with. Its the determination in Jason's face to get the little one to safety. Jason Rennalls protects his little 5 month old rescue kitten Stanley, from the pouring rain, as he walks along King St. in the downtown core. It was found in an air vent . Hamilton Ontario, May 13,2014 An osprey flies away with it's lunch pulled from the Grindstone Creek at Valley Inn Tuesday afternoon. Heavy rainfall over night have raised the water levels significantly and turned water in the bay and surrounding waters muddy brown. The forecast calls for even more rain tonight. This image was shot as a wet weather standup photo. I was concentrating on other birds on the pond when suddenly saw the bird in the air with the fish in it's talons .I shot quickly with a 300mm lens as the osprey flew over me. I only got 3 frames off before the bird was too far away. I like the photo for the angle that clearly reveals the fish in it's grasp as well as individual feathers in it's wings, and it's watchful golden eye. Cathie Coward/ Hamilton Spectator / Standup
