Hamilton , Ontario ,Dec. 29,2014 -A Snowy owl departs from his perch atop a pole along Ofield Road in Dundas Monday afternoon. The owl attracted significant attention as people pulled over on the side of the road to take a closer look at the rare sight. Snowy Owls breed on the Arctic tundra but are being seen more frequently in this area when snow cover up north makes it harder to hunt. Their summer habitat usually includes open fields similar to the area that this bird was photographed. Unlike most owls Snowy Owls are diurnal meaning they hunt both night and day. They prefer lemmings but also eat rabbits, rodents, birds and fish.
