The Nutcracker Ballet was written during the golden age of ballet and based on the book “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”by E.T.A. Hoffman. Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky wrote the music for the ballet during the early 1890’s. Hoffman’s original story was modified quite a bit in order to be suitable for children and become the Christmas classic that it has become. The very first performance of The Nutcracker took place in Russia in 1892. The State Ballet Theatre of Russia is a traveling dance company comprised of 28 dancers who this year have performed the ballets, Cinderella, Swan Lake, and for the holidays The Nutcracker. They travel throughout the United States and Canada and were photographed by Hamilton Spectator photographer Cathie Coward during their performances at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre , December 7 & 8.
